New knowledge reinforces the belief that there could be petroleum in the Jan Mayen area - 23.11.2011

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) and the University of Bergen have acquired geological material from steep parts of the seabed on the Jan Mayen Ridge. Data was acquired from both the Icelandic and Norwegian sides of the ridge.

Two cruises by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate on the Jan Mayen Ridge, including the Dreki Area - 30.6.2011

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate will acquire data in two surveys on the Jan Mayen Ridge this summer. Data will be gathered inside Icelandic EEZ in the Dreki Area as a part of both surveys in cooperation with the National Energy Authority.

The opening date of Second Licensing Round for Exploration and Production Licenses in the Dreki Area, Northeast of Iceland has been postponed until 3 October 2011. The new deadline for applications will be 2 April 2012.

Place names around Iceland in the Iceland Continental Shelf Portal - 11.5.2011

The National Energy Authority has published place names in the sea and on the seafloor around Iceland along with new names for the Dreki Area and the Aegir Basin, but those remote areas have few pre-existing place names. The place names are based on reports by Haukur Jóhannesson that were written at Iceland GeoSurvey for the National Energy Authority. These are shown as two layers; on the one hand, as a map layer, and, on the other hand, as points which give access to further information on the individual place names. Read more

Aeromagnetic survey east and northeast of Iceland - 23.3.2011

The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) will acquire aeromagnetic data in the Jan Mayen Iceland area in Autumn of this year. The survey is supported by the National Energy Authority of Iceland and Norwegian Petroleum Directorate as well as NGU. Read more

Icelandic team lands second place in PetroChallenge International competition - 31.1.2011

Over the last 5 months, over 4000 high school students and 200 teams have participated in PetroChallenge across Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Norway and the UK as part of the Oil and Gas industry's pursuit of finding future personnel. In Iceland, three schools participated. Read more
